In the midst of an economic downturn in which CEOs are being denied annual bonuses, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are getting a $4,700 pay raise, the Hill is reporting.

That’s the great thing about this country, that no matter how bad things get, you can give yourself a pay raise. I think I’ll give myself one now.


Congress’ pay raise is automatic, so nobody there has to be subjected to the embarrassment of voting for it.  And since it’s automatic, it doesn’t have to be based on anything like performance.  It just happens, like Christmas.
