Sen. Roland Burris has denied perjuring himself before an Illinois House panel that was considering impeaching then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who appointed Burris to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, Sean Lengell is reporting.

In a Feb. 4 affidavit to the Illinois House, Burris said Blagojevich’s brother, Robert, asked him for campaign fundraising help before the former governor appointed him to the Senate.

But in testimony last month before the House, Burris said he had not spoken to Robert Blagojevich or other associates of the now-deposed governor about the Obama Senate seat.

Republicans are calling for Burris’ resignation.

Well, that didn’t take long, did it?

With all of the attention on his alleged “pay for play” scandal, Rod Blagojevich would have had a hard time appointing Mother Teresa to that Senate seat.  And not just because she’s dead.

When Rod Blagojevich appointed Burris, Blagojevich said that his political problems should not taint Burris.  Too late.

Perhaps Burris will launch a national media tour to defend himself.  It worked well Rod Blagojevich.  He got to be on Letterman.
