President Bush has declared Washington, D.C., a federal emergency area in advance of next week’s inauguration, Dan Leaderman and Jon Ward are reporting.

Isn’t that a rather extreme reaction to Republicans losing control of the White House?

The “emergency area” declaration, the first ever issued for anything other than a natural disaster, allows the District to receive federal funds to pay for the inauguration’s immense security precautions.

If traffic predictions for Tuesday’s inauguration are accurate, the District will look and feel as if it had been hit by a natural disaster.
