A Providence, R.I., man must do 50 hours of community service because he abandoned 280 rats in aquariums and cages by the side of a road, is reporting.

Toby Duffany pleaded no contest to animal abandonment and was ordered to pay $1,000 for restitution.

About 72 of the rats had died by the time they were recovered, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals euthanized the rest.

So instead of abandoning them he should have called the exterminator?

I don’t like cruelty to most animals, but I must admit that I’ve killed a few rats in my time.  Not in cages, though.

I’m curious why he had so many rats in the first place.  If I were anywhere with that many rats, I’d move.

Rats are pretty smart, so I’m told.  So now that a precedent has been set, expect the rats to sue next time.
