During her recent visit to Mexico, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and inquired about the image of the Virgin Mary, the Catholic News Agency is reporting.

Clinton asked, “Who painted it?”

A monsignor said, “God.”

I’m surprised that Clinton didn’t say, “Well, She does lovely work.”

But what she did say to her Mexican greeters after leaving the basilica was, “You have marvelous virgin.”  Nice.  That’s diplomacy.
