Season tickets for the 2009-10 Capitals season went on sale Monday and the team reported more than 1,000 in sales of new full-season packages.

That’s an impressive start for a team that is already in the middle of a huge year, attendance-wise.The team is averaging more than 18,000 fans per game, a 27 percent increase over the same period last year. Nearly every game has been a sellout, as the team came into the season having already doubled its base of season ticket equivalents to more than 12,000.

The Capitals said there are indications that renewals of season tickets are also strong. This season, renewals came in well above 90 percent. A repeat of that coupled with strong new sales could vault the season ticket base to a level that virtually guarantees Verizon Center will be at 100 percent capacity every night.
