Sports Business Journal has a very in-depth piece today explaining why you might not get the NFL Network, and what’s being done about it.

SBJ’s John Ourand offers some great detail about how the network was formed and why it is still dealing with distribiution struggles in its 6th year of existence.

A few interesting tidbits:

- The NFL Network is in talks with Fox about offering a possible equity stake.

- Similar talks with ESPN are no longer active.

- Comcast thought it had a deal to carry the network on a widely-distributed digital tier in exhange for getting a package of games for its Versus sports network. The NFL instead moved that package to the NFL Network, so Comcast moved the network to a lower sports and entertainment tier.

- Time Warner and the NFL Network were close to a carriage deal, but it fell apart as the two sides were negotiating the nitty gritty terms
