Feeling good about saving the environment is one thing, but getting what you pay for is another story.  Highly educated Barack Obama supporters may think their hybrid car is saving the planet, but the numbers say something a little different. Forty-two percent of U.S. households that own at least one hybrid vehicle have an annual income of $100,000 or more.  They are twice as likely as all American adults to have a college education(including the 27% who have post graduate degrees) and are more likely to be Democrats, says an analysis from Scarborough Research. Scarborough states:

“When it comes to politics, the Democratic party commands the highest percentage of Hybrid Owners. Thirty-eight percent of Hybrid Owners cite Democrat as their political party affiliation. Fourteen percent are Republican, and 34 percent are Independent. The Independents include those who stated in the Scarborough survey they were “Independent” (eight percent of Hybrid Owners); “Independent, but feel closer to Democrat,”(20 percent of Hybrid Owners), and “Independent, but feel closer to Republican” (six percent of Hybrid Owners). Fifteen percent of Hybrid Owners did not identify with a political party in the Scarborough analysis. Eighty-one percent of Hybrid Owners stated they “always” vote in presidential elections, versus 71 percent of the total U.S. adult population.”

However, the newly government owned car company General Motors reportedly cancelled most of its hybrid lineup. Motorauthority.com reports

“General Motors is getting rid of a couple of struggling hybrids currently residing in its range of cars - the Chevrolet MalibHybrid and the Saturn Vue Hybrid.

The move comes as a greater push to trim down its range of products and focus on models that can achieve growth for the company. With the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid’s poor sales, GM has decided to stop production of the car for the 2010 model year, and will instead be relying on the backlog of 2009 models currently sitting on dealer forecourts to fill any remain demand, reports the Wall Street Journal.”

Apparently, those who did not fit into the wealthy, Democrat, and educated demographic of all hybrid owners realized the  “four-cylinder Malibu was capable of achieving a combined cycle of almost 28mpg, while the hybrid only offered combined fuel consumption of 30mpg.”  This means the mileage between the petrol and hybrid versions of the Malibu were only marginally different, but the petrol version was less expensive.

It looks like right-wing neanderthals who do not own a hybrid vehicle are much smarter with money than given credit for, but why should an Obama supporting hybrid owner care?  Spending too much money for feeling good about oneself, regardless of reality, is what rules their day.
