Legendary comic book store owner Greg Bennett provides a pair of recommendations for comic book lovers every week. Titles are either currently on specialty store shelves or shipping or in the near future. Fans can also click on the covers to appreciate the fine art.

Ruins, No. 1 from Marvel Entertainment

Ruins, No. 1, Marvel Entertainment ($4.99)

Warren Ellis’ long-lost story of the twilight of the Marvel Universe is finally available again. Sort of a What If…? version of Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek’s Marvels. Dark and twisted (what did you expect from Warren Ellis?) and highly recommended.

Mysterius the Unfathomable, No. 1 from DC Comics/Wildstorm

Mysterius the Unfathomable, No. 1, DC Comics/Wildstorm ($2.99)

Wildstorm tries to expand its horizons again, going beyond its regular Jim Lee-created super-hero staples. (An earlier attempt, Peter Milligan’s The Programme, was great, although it probably would have sold better as a Vertigo title). Jeff Parker, creator of the Interman, and writer of some great retro Marvel comics (Agents of Atlas, Age of Sentry, Marvel Adventures: The Avengers) brings us this tale of a seemingly immortal mystic and his much younger and hipper sidekick. Beautiful art by Tom Fowler too!

P.S. The 2nd printing of the Obama Spider-man is available (at least briefly) this week, and the 3rd printing should be out next week (with a great flag cover).

Greg Bennett is the Owner/Manager of Big Planet Comics, a chain of pop art specialty stores in the DC Metro area with locations in Georgetown, Bethesda, Vienna, & College Park.
