Black allegiance to Democrats misplaced

Black History Month is a good time to remind people that Democrats professed an apparent contradiction as they seceded to begin the Civil War. They demanded protection for slavery and the right to take their "peculiar property" into the territories. They demanded to be able to trade their "property" across state lines and demanded that states enforce the Fugitive Slave Law. Yet during prior and final congressional debates and on their constitution, southerners joined the near-universal condemnation of international slave trading.

Biden’s dangerous dealings with foes

Will Americans ever reach a tipping point, one at which they say they have had enough of the Biden administration? It is a pertinent and reasonable question because this administration has already put the country through cataclysmic changes and crises. Would the American people have consented to the impeachment of President Trump under similar circumstances? This question needs to be asked, acknowledged, comprehended and then answered.

Privacy not an ‘unalienable’ right

Andrew Napolitano's championing of freedom over security is mostly proper and admirable ("All government domestic spying is a violation of personal freedom," Web, Feb. 2). Freedom is an inalienable right for everyone. But it always has consequences, and nature's design does not allow us the freedom to avoid those consequences when we abuse it.

Biden court criteria are racist, period

One would think Biden had learned not to make race and gender the criteria of selection to a position, given how his vice-presidential pick turned out ("Biden's Supreme Court discrimination," Web, Jan. 28). However, this inept, unqualified, incapable and evil man got just what he and his ilk wanted: racism and division, a demeaned candidate, an attempted political payoff and distraction.

Why is U.S. in Beijing Olympics?

In 1936, members of the American Olympic Committee were either hoodwinked or chose to overlook Nazi abuses, as little opposition was raised to American participation in that year's games. In 1980, then-President Jimmy Carter's unpopular decision to withdraw America from the Moscow Olympics displayed a strong stance against the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.

A number of so-called human rights groups have gratuitously attacked Israel for years -- while ignoring the rampant Islamic terrorism and abuses of Israel's neighbors, both in the Middle East and abroad ("Amnesty joins rights groups in accusing Israel of apartheid," Web, Feb. 1).

Being a card-carrying member of a Virginia-recognized Indian tribe but looking more white than the Hollywood version of an "indigenous" person, I have often been prohibited from dancing, singing and socializing at powwows. And although not easily offended myself, I was truly appalled at Monday's Holocaust comment by "The View" host Whoopi Goldberg.

Democrats keep dusting off Hillary

Hillary Clinton is a well-educated woman but her lust for power combined with her vivid imagination disposes her to take dangerous, if not reckless, measures to reach her personal objectives. She was and still is well aware that language creates consciousness and consciousness creates reality. A case in point is her important and controversial role, which came to light during the 2016 presidential campaign, in the creation of an insidious report claiming that her opponent, Donald Trump, was a traitor to the nation.

Abandonment of science killed many

There is no such thing as a 'zero-COVID-19 zone' anywhere in the world ("Beijing clamps down before Winter Olympics: Rolling lockdowns, daily COVID-19 tests," Web, Jan. 31). The latest variant is far more infectious than its predecessors. The viral evolution was predicted months ago by knowlegeable viroligists who were experts in the population effects resulting from the administration of a leaky, non-sterilizing vaccine to an infected population with a highly mutable virus. This has been one of the biggest public health crimes you will ever see in your lifetime.

Supreme Court choices already political

Selection of a Supreme Court justice is political and both Republicans and Democrats choose nominees based on their best idea of how the person will adjudicate cases ("Sen. Susan Collins: Biden pledge to name Black woman to Supreme Court will politicize institution," Web, Jan. 30). Once the Senate confirms, the justice is supposed to render decisions based solely on the Constitution and precedents. In other words, he or she is meant to decide without adherence to personal political preferences. In general the justices adhere to that guideline, but in cases wherein a decision will impact society in an outsize manner, the court divides into two major groups informed by political preference. The liberal group visualizes penumbras from the Constitution that the conservative group doesn't see. In other words, conservative flights of judicial fancy are more constrained than liberal journeys into progressive shadows.

Decrying violence, thuggery not racist

Former "Real Housewives of Salt Lake City" star Jennie Nguyen needed to hurt a lot of people. The people she hurt want to eradicate ageless expressions of moral authority binding families together and substitute peculiar symbols for racism, which grant them immediate popularity. The adulthood and dignity found as individuals has been traded away for a prestige lacking dreams to pursue and accomplishments to celebrate. Their frivolous, brittle, impoverished character then achieves self-actualization through moral exhibitionism and militant self-absorption.

China is watching

In the largest sortie of the new year, China flew 39 warplanes toward Taiwan on Jan 24. In the meantime, Vladimir Putin is gathering troops on the Ukraine border for a possible invasion. It's not hard to imagine a scenario whereby a misunderstood signal or action could lead to a deadly incident in the Taiwan Strait. American policy makers ought to understand that these two events can't be viewed in isolation.
