There’s got to be a better way

Cash for student athletes a bad idea

As of this month the NCAA is moving forward with allowing players to receive direct cash payments for the marketing of their images ("Student athletes cleared to cash in on name, image," Page 1, July 1). This is the latest flurry of institutional changes across the country, and it's always a terrible mistake when public policies are based on social trends.

Give ‘ranked choice’ a chance

Sometimes known as "instant-runoff" voting, "ranked choice" allows for more than two people to run in an election without fear of their vote being 'wasted' and possibly getting a last choice elected with a mere plurality -- as has happened twice in Virginia.

Virus no dire threat to most kids

There is more going on here than derangement syndrome ("The Make-A-Wish Foundation falls prey to COVID Derangement Syndrome," Web, June 29). A recent study out of Israel, one of the most vaccinated countries on Earth, revealed that the number of vaccinated people needed to prevent one COVID-19 case was over 700. The number needed to prevent one death was over 10,000. These are population numbers, and would be different for subgroups such as children or an infirm 85-year-old.

Sick kids are suffering enough

I'd like to thank Tammy Bruce for her comments on the Make-A-Wish Foundation ("The Make-A-Wish Foundation falls prey to COVID Derangement Syndrome," Web, June 29). The very sick children who benefit from the largesse of Make-A-Wish Foundation donors should not be vaccinated simply so the organization can feel righteous. These children are sick enough already, and we can only hope that they will survive another year.

As GOP mum, left spends nonstop

A free lunch for everyone but the wealthy may not be very filling, but President Biden will spin a tale of bucks from only the wealthy anyway, and few from his side of the scam will harsh the Democratic mellow ("Moderate Biden force-feeding the nation with woke ideas," Web, June 29). Even many academically and professionally successful Americans will fall in with the dole if their income is initially beneath the magic figure, not troubling to do the easy arithmetic that would predict troubles to come.

Hold Fauci accountable

It is this American's opinion that enough evidence has been found to prosecute Anthony Fauci for his role in in the deaths of millions of people globally. Critical decisions were made based upon the lies that came from Dr. Fauci's mouth. Economies were devastated, families were torn apart and lives were lost simply because a single, power-hungry man needed to be important. The facts show that Fauci was up to his neck in weaponizing the deadly virus that now threatens the very existence of every man, woman and child on the planet.

UFOs are no threat

To "An inconclusive assessment on UFOs means the truth is still out there" (Web, June 28), I can add this. When I lived in Colombia, one evening in 1969 a friend and I saw a UFO. It was unmistakable. At first we thought it was an artificial satellite -- a Sputnik -- headed west toward Cali, which was 20 kilometers away. As it passed over the city, it veered left, following the Andes south toward Ecuador. Sputniks, my friend and I agreed, do not make sharp turns in orbit.

Declare ‘independence’ from meat

The scarcity of animal meat caused by the COVID-19 pandemic will keep our outdoor grills safer this Independence Day. Folks who grill hamburgers and hot dogs face a nasty choice. The U.S. Meat and Poultry Hotline advises grilling at high temperature to avoid food poisoning by E. coli and Salmonella bacteria. But the National Cancer Institute warns that high-temperature grilling of processed meats generates cancer-causing compounds.

Bill Barr calls former President Trump's claim of voter fraud nonsense because the Justice Department looked into them and -- wait for it -- found nothing ("Trump: 'RINO' Barr helped cover up 'crime of the century,'" Web, June 28). How does he know there was no voter fraud? Because he asked the Democrats and they assured him?

Stop Planned Parenthood

In "Two-parent families are not only a moral imperative, they are an economic one, too" (Web, June 24) former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker writes that the out-of-wedlock birth rate is increasing in the U.S., and he cites an enormous increase in this rate since 1965, especially among Black Americans. The children, according to Walker, end up having many problems.
