Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, NRC, Jan Egeland, listens to a question during an interview with The Associated Press in Kabul, Afghanistan, Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023. The Taliban's "internal debates and extreme decrees" are paralyzing humanitarian work in Afghanistan, the head of a major aid agency told The Associated Press on Sunday, after he arrived on a week-long trip to talk to Taliban leaders about reversing a ban on women working for national and international nongovernmental groups. In this photo taken Sunday, March 29, 2020, Boureima Gassambe speaks to The Associated Press at the makeshift camp for the internally displaced where he and around 600 others live in an abandoned school on the outskirts of the capital, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The rapid spread of the coronavirus has raised fears about the world’s refugees and internally displaced people, many of whom live in war-ravaged countries that are ill-equipped to test for the virus or contain a possible outbreak. “We ran away from the terrorists and came here, but now there’s the coronavirus, and we don’t know what will happen,” said Gassambe. Mediterranea Saving Humans said Friday in a tweet that its sailing boat ALEX was off Italy's southernmost island of Lampedusa, just outside Italian territorial waters, and that it has been banned from entering Italian jurisdiction by ministerial decree.
