Sen. Barack Obama says he raised a record $55 million last month, trouncing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s own fundraising haul in an announcement that deflected attention away from a potential Clinton comeback in the Democratic presidential race.\ \ \ Mrs. Clinton had boasted her own big fundraising news yesterday — saying she raised $4 million since her Tuesday primary victories and $6 million so far this month — but the Obama numbers dominated the political conversation as the Democrats looked ahead to the next contests.\ \ \ Mr. Obama, who took a day off from the campaign trail, told supporters in an e-mail that the $55 million set a new record, that 90 percent of the donations were $100 or less and that half were $25 or less.\ \ \ “From the beginning, this campaign has always been funded by a movement of grassroots supporters giving whatever they can afford. And unlike Sen. Clinton and Sen. McCain, we have never taken money from lobbyists or PACs,” he wrote.
