HONG KONG — Typhoon Nuri slammed into Hong Kong yesterday, shutting down most of the city. However, the Olympic equestrian events were spared the brunt of Nuri’s wrath.

The Category 9 storm, the first of its kind since 2003, began churning up Thursday night, though by that point, the equestrian events in Hong Kong were wrapping up. The last event, jumping’s individual jump-off, was scheduled for 11:28 p.m. Thursday, when the storm was only a Category 3 (the category designations run in the order of 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10).
