Defensive back/linebacker Desmond Kearse has left the Maryland football program.

Coach Randy Edsall said Friday the rising sophomore was “no longer with us due to academic issues.” Kearse played in five games, including one start, in his career at Maryland.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder played as a true freshman in 2010 and earned a starting nod against Florida International. But he suffered an ankle injury and received a medical hardship waiver.

Kearse appeared against Clemson and Florida State last season, but did not receive regular playing time. He is the ninth scholarship player to leave Maryland’s program since the end of the Terrapins’ 2-10 season.
