Maryland offensive lineman Pete DeSouza will no longer play and segue into a student assistant coaching role.

DeSouza broke both his legs in an Oct. 21, 2010, motor scooter accident on campus. He had played in five games that season at right tackle, starting three. He was cleared for contact before last season but did not play.

“Pete will not be playing anymore due to his injuries that he had,” coach Randy Edsall said. “But what we’re doing is keeping Pete involved in our program. He’ll end up being a student coach. Coaching is something Pete wants to get involved with, so we’ll have him learning the tricks of the trade. So he’ll be part of us and we’ll be able to keep him involved in football and doing things with us. So that’s a positive. It’s unfortunate that he was never able to come back off those injuries.”
