Sen. John McCain knows how to excite a campaign crowd, but he also knows how to quiet one with a dud joke.

Mr. McCain, Arizona Republican, was stumping for GOP presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney in Manchester, N.H., Wednesday when he thanked former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, who was also present at the rally.

Said Mr. McCain: “I can’t help but see Gov. Sununu without [thinking of] that old joke about two inmates in the chow line at the state prison, and one of them turned to the other and said, ‘The food was a lot better in here when YOU were governor.”

The audience, which had been cheering moments earlier, quieted and then laughed nervously.

“But uh, anyway,” Mr. McCain said. “Some states, you can’t tell that joke.”
