GOP nominee Mitt Romney raised twice as much from wealthy donors giving $10,000 or more to a high-donor fund last month, records showed Friday, even though President Obama and the Democrats out-raised Mr. Romney and the Republicans overall for the month.

Mr. Obama raised $53 million of his $181 million September total from people giving between $10,000 and $75,000 — largely top executives of companies such as GroupOn as well as artists and athletes.

Mr. Romney raised only $170 million in September, but he relied on those major donors for $95 million of it.

Cash-on-hand numbers were significantly less promising for Democrats, however. The Democratic National Committee had only $4.6 million in the bank as of Oct. 1, and it has $20 million in debts and a $10 million outstanding loan. The Obama wealthy donor fund has hung on to much of its cash rather than transfer it to the DNC, and it has $45 million in the bank.

The Republican National Committee, by comparison, had $76 million in the bank and only $10 million in debts as of Sept. 1, and Mr. Romney’s wealthy donor fund had $38 million on hand as of Oct. 1.
