National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden has been voted person of the year by the readers of The Guardian, a British newspaper.
Mr. Snowden walked away with the award, winning 1,445 votes of the more than 3,500 people who voted, the newspaper said.
Marco Weber and Sini Saarela, Greenpeace activists who led an oil rig protest over Russian Arctic drilling, came in a distance second place.
Mr. Snowden leaked thousands of documents to the press, much of it to The Guardian, about the NSA’s deep-reaching, data-collection efforts, sparking a debate both inside and outside the U.S. about the government’s snooping program.
Russia gave Mr. Snowden asylum earlier this year.
