Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont Democrat, said on Monday that some senators are too focused on their individual success to make him confident that the chamber can reach a deal.

“If we had grown-ups who cared more about the country than they do about getting on television and their own political future and the kind of fundraising they can do to one, small ideological group, then I’d be very confident,” Mr. Leahy told reporters. “But as long as you have people who are more interested in their own political future than the country, it is very difficult.”

Though he did not call out any senators by name, this charge has previously been made against Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, who some said used his filibuster to position him for a White House bid in 2016.
