Rep. Barbara Lee, California Democrat, said Thursday that the cuts to the nation’s food stamp program that go into effect Friday are unacceptable.

“This is not the American way. People deserve to eat,” she said on MSNBC.

The congresswoman, who relied on public assistance as a young adult, is also worried about future cuts under both the House and Senate farm bills as well as a work requirement, which Ms. Lee says in unfair given the state of the economy.

“The jobs aren’t there. We have to create jobs,” she said. “And people who are working, they need a living wage.”
