Dissatisfaction with how well the government works is the highest since Gallup began tracking it 14 years ago, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Sixty-five percent of Americans are very or somewhat dissatisfied with the system of government and how effective it is, the poll found. That’s 5 points higher than in 2013 and just 1 point higher than the previous high 64 percent dissatisfaction in 2012. It’s more than double the 23 percent dissatisfaction rate in 2002, the lowest in the 14-year window.

While Democrats satisfaction has hovered around 50 percent for the last 10 years, Republicans and independents have both become less satisfied. Just 28 percent of both Republicans and independents are are satisfied with the government’s effectiveness in 2014.

Poll results come from telephone interviews with more than 1,000 adults across the country between Jan. 5-8. The margin of error is 4 percent.
