White House press secretary Jay Carney elicited groans and hoots from the press corps Monday as he sported a new beard at his first briefing of the new year.

“Whoa!” several journalists called out when the press secretary emerged from his lair with the new look after a two-week holiday break.

“My wife says she likes it, so there,” Mr. Carney said, smiling.

A reporter called out “TMI” (too much information) to more laughter.
