Sen. Chuck Schumer, New York Democrat, said he doesn’t believe Congress needs to investigate closings on the George Washington Bridge that members of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s staff orchestrated as political retaliation.

“I don’t know that Congress should be investigating this,” Mr. Schumer told reporters Thursday.

Emails surfaced yesterday that linked members of Mr. Christie’s staff to closed lanes on the main bridge between New York and New Jersey, creating traffic snarls to allegedly punish Fort Lee, N.J., Mayor Mark Sokolich for not supporting Mr. Christie’s re-election.

“I saw the emails, I think they’re really bad and we’ll see where it goes next,” Mr. Schumer said.

Mr. Schumer said he had yet to see Mr. Christie’s apology and news conference which began at 11 a.m. Thursday.
