Tokyo Olympics poised for new level of sports protests under newly relaxed rules

Fans have watched as protests have become a sports fixture in recent years -- from Colin Kaepernick taking a knee in 2016 to the Milwaukee Bucks refusing to take the court last year to track-and-field star Gwen Berry turning her back on the U.S. flag during last month's Olympic trials. But the Summer Games in Tokyo later this month are poised to take slogan-waving, fist-raising and anthem-protesting to a new level.

White House supports Olympian Gwen Berry’s anthem protest

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that while she hasn't spoken to President Biden about hammer-thrower Gwen Berry's demonstration during the U.S. Olympic trials, she knows the president would approve of peaceful protest during the playing of the national anthem.

Nationals top Phillies in epic slugfest

There was Kyle Schwarber's three-run homer and Josh Bell's grand slam. There was Travis Jankowski's three-run homer and Andrew McCutchen's grand slam. Never in the history of baseball has a game included those hits from both teams, according to Jeremy Frank, an MLB statistician. But the deciding blow came from Starlin Castro's two-run, game-winning single in the top of the ninth of the Nationals' 13-12 win over the Phillies.
