LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Fix whole gun problem, not part

Owning a gun is a right that everyone should have ("Voices of the gun," Web, March 27). While I do not believe in repealing the Second Amendment, I do believe in gun control -- but it should go beyond making "the background system stronger by making sure it has all the records of violent criminals and those who are found by a court to have a dangerous mental illness," as your editorial quotes Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, as saying. Why? Because merely proposing to change the background system will not decrease shootings.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Congress is the problem

Our national debt is staggering. But it is Congress that is at fault for spending on unconstitutional things. If Congress only appropriated funds for that which it is authorized to do by the U.S. Constitution, we could start paying off our debt. That we do not have spending cuts is not the fault of the Constitution, so changing the Constitution by having a constitutional convention, as some have suggested, is not the solution to our debt. The solution is to change Congress.

To understand the historical origins of the school-shooter-broken-home connection ("Link between mass shooters, absent fathers ignored by anti-gun activists," Web, March 27) one must think back to the end of World War II. Then, returning heroes, educated under the GI bill, started families, bought homes, built businesses and came to be known as "the Greatest Generation." A common saying during this time was, "A man's word is his bond."

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Disarmament despots’ first move

John Paul Stevens, retired Supreme Court justice, recently called for the repeal of the Second Amendment and is encouraging anti-gun protesters to do the same ("Former Supreme Court Justice Stevens: Repeal the Second Amendment," Web, March 27). Justice Stevens argued that the amendment — which states that "a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" — is a "relic of the 18th century." Justice Stevens is emphatically wrong.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No more intrusion from businesses

I am glad that social media users and government officials are now interested in some sort of right to privacy ("Facebook under fire as prosecutors, Congress confirm investigation," Web, March 26). I don't think online companies, such as Facebook, should be allowed to collect any personal information or track the online activities of their users. In fact, I don't think that "off-line" companies should be allowed to store, use or sell the personal information of their customers, either.

Under the Obama administration the Federal Reserve determined that the economy had a real risk of declining — so it greatly lowered interest rates and decided to print $3 trillion in U.S. currency. Who says Donald Trump can't get tough with Russians? The president's order on Monday to send 60 Russian "diplomats" home, joining Canada, Poland, Italy, Denmark, France and Germany among other European nations, is welcome solidarity with Britain. It's in answer to the poisoning of a onetime Russian spy and his daughter as they sat on a public bench March 4 in the English provincial town of Salisbury. Britain had earlier expelled 23 "diplomats."

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No online or show ‘loopholes’

When will gun-control activists get informed of actual facts? There is no "gun show loophole" or "online purchase loophole." For online purchases, a seller must ship the gun to a licensed dealer, who must then run a background check before handing the gun over to the buyer. A dealer at a gun show must also run a background check before the gun changes hands. Sometimes these are completed within minutes, sometimes in a day or two.
