Our president is unique in many ways, most of which are unflattering. However, he has one very frightening similarity with many of the other world leaders: A hyper-emphasis on besting his counterparts. This trait has created a global culture where success is measured not by whether we are being the best humans we can be, but rather whether we are doing better than other nations. This system of measurement would work if the leading nation were a perfect utopia, but I think we can all agree that type of country doesn't exist in this world.

The Women's March movement should be condemned for failing to immediately oust and sever ties with three of its most prominent leaders — Tamika Mallory, Carmen Perez and Linda Sarsour — who publicly supported Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan following a Feb. 25 speech in which he called Jews "Satanic" ("Women's March under fire over links to Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan, anti-Semitism," Web, March 7).

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: ‘Earth Hour’ waste of time

Tomorrow's "Earth Hour" is completely futile. Thinking something can be achieved with a one-hour gesture is pure hubris. The whole purpose of the exercise is to make us more environmentally aware, which is somewhat esoteric. Wouldn't it be of more benefit to actually target problems that significantly affect the lives of millions, including famine, homelessness, poverty and disease? If environmentalists believe the planet is under some dire threat from fossil-fuel emissions, why don't they keep their lights off permanently?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Allow retailers freedom, too

"Throwing shade on the Second Amendment" (Web, March 20) takes retail companies to task for raising the age limit for gun purchasing and "imposing their own rules on who can buy a gun." It gives the example of "service members" who could "return from combat duty in Afghanistan to find [they] cannot buy a rifle to go hunting." But is there a U.S. law requiring that retailers must sell long guns to all people under 21? There is a law restricting the sale of handguns to all people under 21.

Why does the teacher who gave a student a failing grade on a quiz given during the National Student Walkout believe the political event undermines our Constitution — when the First Amendment grants us free speech ("Calif. teacher defends lowering student's grade for participating in 'highly divisive' walkout," (Web, March 19)? The walkout should be compared to a fight for human and civil rights, not a basketball game. This teacher has missed a valuable opportunity to teach the students a lesson on how to advocate for themselves.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, New York Democrat, have made a big mistake. As the Democratic leaders of the House and Senate they encouraged "resistance" to the Republicans, especially the Republicans in the Trump administration. That has meant only opposition -- no compromise or negotiation. The result is shown in the new tax laws, which had no Democratic input or support.

The justified firing of seditious former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has brought the rats out of hiding and into the light of day (" 'Lack of candor': Reason for firing McCabe one of most serious in FBI," Web, March 18). John Brennan, who abused the privacy rights of American citizens and the ever-corrupt Samantha Powers have now weighed in on the McCabe firing. I haven't done enough research or analysis to determine whether Washington Times contributor Donald Lambro is a card-carrying "Never-Trump"-er, but my perception over time has been that when Mr. Lambro's name is on top of a column, there's bound to be some Trump-bashing below. All well and good, as the president is far from flawless and everyone can use some criticism from time to time. And Mr. Lambro certainly has proven that he can be counted on to provide this service for The Times.
