LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Pact would aid China’s machinations

Columnist John J. Tkacik is absolutely correct when he writes that "most Taiwanese see the [proposed trade-in-services pact with the People's Republic of China] as a strategic move on the way to Taiwan's political union with its biggest economic counterpart" ("Taiwan struggles in China's trade grip," Web, April 1).

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Reagan, not Obama, deserves Spielberg award

I recently read that "Schindler's List" director Steven Spielberg plans to honor President Obama for the president's work in human rights. This will take place at a planned May 7 event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Mr. Spielberg's Shoah Foundation.

March Madness comes to a close next week. The annual collegiate basketball tournament determines which of 68 teams takes home the men's championship trophy. The students who participate, even the ones who win, won't take home anything — except, if they stay out of trouble and stick around long enough, a college diploma.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Russia enjoying Clinton’s ‘reset’ gift

On June 3, 2008, a very junior Democratic Party senator and soon-to-be presidential nominee stepped to a microphone and to the world proclaimed, "Change is realizing that meeting today's threats requires not just our firepower, but the power of our diplomacy — tough, direct diplomacy, where the president of the United States isn't afraid to let any petty dictator know where America stands and what we stand for. We must once again have the courage and conviction to lead the free world."
