There are two overarching paradigms that control the reaction to COVID-19. Unfortunately, they have been charged with a high degree of politicization and used to try to break one philosophical ideal or another. In the United States the Democrats adhere to the paradigm of science when it comes to COVID-19. There is no room for living life normally, according to the Democrats. Instead, one must obey the science — whatever it might be that day.

Media pundits continue to speculate on the possibility that President Trump might question the results of the upcoming election and use that as a reason for not leaving the White House if he loses. Few, however, seem to recognize that the nation will certainly face significant confusion about the election results as a result of mail-in voting — and it's an uncertainty that might stretch into the weeks beyond election night.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Biden’s a bully

The thing that scares me about Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is that he is a bully. And he is not just a bully; he is a bully with a hair trigger. Look how quickly he teed off on an 83-year-old man in Iowa who simply asked him a question. Mr. Biden called him a fat liar. When a young college student in New Hampshire asked him about his poor showing in Iowa, he insultingly called her a "lying, dog-faced pony soldier." So he picks on people who are older, younger or weaker — just like a bully does.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Choose ‘drill’ that does job

As Nov. 3 approaches, it's appropriate to meditate on the parable of the quarter-inch drill. If you need quarter-inch holes, you buy a quarter-inch drill. The drill gets you your quarter-inch holes in quantity. But while you're glad to have the holes for your project, there's no requirement for you to love the drill that made them, or for the drill to pass your aesthetic or stylistic standards.

The Democrats will say just about anything to delay Judge Amy Coney Barrett's lifetime appointment to a seat on the United States Supreme Court. They're so afraid she'll provide the critical vote that undoes their agenda they don't care what reason they give to stop it.

It is interesting how the mainstream media and the Democrats have reduced themselves to COVID-19 shaming. In other words, it is all your fault because you did not wear a mask and hide in your basement. This behavior is reminiscent of the reaction in the '80s and '90s to people infected with HIV.

Sen. Kamala Harris is pretty, but that is where her good points end. Her ancestors owned slaves, so I don't know how she gets away with calling other people racist. Why does the political left never mention Ms. Harris' slave-owning ancestors? I guess she cannot help it, but neither can any Southerners help that their ancestors owned slaves. My great-great-grandfather came over from Ireland and was a congressman in South Carolina. He had a plantation near Columbia, South Carolina, where my grandmother was born. He left a slave girl to his wife when he died. Should I be held responsible?

EDITORIAL: Don’t discount the Pence-Harris debate

Divided between plexiglass barriers, Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris will meet Wednesday for their first and only debate. Unlike past "junior-varsity" matches, what's in store will reveal the aptitude of each of the candidates and two very different portraits of the future. Many voters think Ms. Harris will likely end up running things in the White House should the Democrats win. But the ability to carry out the duties of the presidency, if necessary, is something that both will be judged on.

First the Yugoslav wars and now the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict confirm a geopolitical maxim ("Azerbaijan claims seizing villages in fighting with Armenia," Web, Oct. 3). The breakup of multinational entities is likely to result in young states that do not naturally command the allegiance of all their people. Put more crudely: Better you be a minority in my state than I in yours.

EDITORIAL: Like fellow Americans, Trump is in the fight against coronavirus

Billionaire businessman, TV showman and Free World helmsman Donald Trump has long stood in a class by himself. At the same time, he has never abandoned the street-level populism enjoining him the millions of voters he has aroused. It is perhaps fitting, then, that the greatest challenge to Mr. Trump's presidency — and his person — is the very same coronavirus threat faced by 21st century Everyman. How he handles his personal test in the battle against the deadly disease may determine whether America emerges from the pandemic epoch with victory.

One only has to watch the movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" to get an eerie feeling about the combined efforts of the fake-news media, Facebook, deep-state RINO "Republicans" and the CIA to stop President Trump from putting America first. The deep state now knows how to press the right buttons to make us accept living in fear and groveling, all while it ignores our basic constitutional rights. If you want to get our county back, I suggest you give Mr. Trump four more years. He deserves them a lot more than President Obama did.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Absentee voting not secure

The official Prince George's County, Maryland, absentee ballots arrived at our house this week. On the "privacy flap" of the ballot's return envelope is printed the following: "Your signature page will be SEPARATED FROM YOUR BALLOT before your ballot is counted. This makes sure no one can connect your name to how you voted." Except that to separate the signature page from the ballot, the envelope has to be opened and the ballot physically removed, because the signature page cannot be detached from the closed envelope. This means someone will be holding your ballot, out of the envelope, in one hand, and the envelope with your identification information and signature in the other. Do officials really expect voters to believe that these someones will never look? Give me a break.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Kowtowing to youth a mistake

Ancient Chinese and Greek cultures respected and revered the wisdom of their elderly, prominent figures 60 years of age and older providing guiding influence. Our society would profit from referencing knowledge and truth derived from such civilizations. Instead we seem to be taking the opposite approach, with some even suggesting 16-year-olds be granted the vote. The average teenager is given to behavior which can hardly be described as rational; indeed, the human brain is not fully formed until age 25.

Remember back in Charlottesville, Virinia, when the memory of Robert E. Lee was being disgraced more than the man himself was disgraced at Appomattox, and the Ku Klux Klan and Antifa fought their first battle? President Trump was too kind then. He said there were "good" people on both sides. Wouldn't it have been more accurate to say that there were bad people on both sides? No, that would have been unthinkable to Antifa and Rep. Maxine Waters of California.

In death as in life, the influence of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is undeniable. While Democrats argue the ethics of appointing a new justice before the election, let's examine Ginsburg's legacy. She was a trailblazer who seemed to have it all: marriage, children and a stellar legal career. She was an unapologetic champion of abortion. She believed it was a woman's right, a right that was in direct opposition to the U.S. Constitution she swore to uphold when she became a justice.
