OPINION:
Assuming a 45-year working life, the average American taxpayer will pay about one-third of their lifetime income in taxes.
That estimate includes income, property, sales and vehicle taxes. Unfortunately, we can expect our tax load to only get heavier as more “socialists” are elected.
Those who clamor for single-payer, government-run healthcare or a guaranteed basic income forget how inefficient governments are and how much costs balloon whenever the government inserts itself.
The evidence is everywhere. Look to states’ departments of motor vehicles, the IRS and the Department of Veterans Affairs as examples. Data also clearly indicates the exploding cost of both education and housing are largely due to government interference in those sectors.
With its endless duplication, systemic inertia, corruption and fraud, Congress and its supporting bureaucracy have reached the point at which the economics of scale has reversed itself. Our federal government has become too big to be manageable. Just see Congress’ now decades-long inability to complete its primary job of controlling the budget.
Our lives would be much better with less government, not more. I beg all to keep this in mind in November as we choose who we will send to represent us in Washington.
