District of Sports: Washington Spirit seek third-straight finals appearance as NWSL playoffs begin

Podcast

It’s playoff soccer time in the District once again for the Washington Spirit, who secured third in the National Women’s Soccer League standings with a 2-0 win over Chicago Nov. 1.

The sixth sellout of the season at Audi Field saw the Spirit go up on an own goal credited to Michelle Alozie in the 62nd minute, and a Trinity Rodman score in the 78th minute added to the winning margin.

With 55 points on the season, Washington is back in the playoffs seeking its fifth NWSL Championship appearance and third in a row. The Spirit host a quarterfinal match at Audi Field for the third-straight year, facing one of the league’s high powered offenses as Sophia Wilson and Portland Thorns FC come to D.C. Nov. 8.

Washington Times Sports Reporter George Gerbo talks with Spirit and NWSL researcher and historian Michael Minnich to preview the matchup, break down where Washington can find scoring in addition to star forward Trinity Rodman, and discuss the events and plans surrounding this year’s NWSL Championship, which will be held in the District for the second time on Nov. 21.

Washington only allowed 28 goals this season, second fewest in the NWSL, while Portland’s 41 goals conceded is worst among the league’s eight playoff teams.

The NWSL Championship takes place Saturday, Nov. 21 at Audi Field, and is preceded by a week full of soccer events around the region, including the NWSL Awards at George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium Nov. 18, the NWSL Skills Challenge at Episcopal High School in Alexandria Nov. 20, and a fan festival and 5K race at The Wharf in Southwest on Nov. 21.
