OK, this is it. It’s 11 p.m. The deadline is one hour away. Our long national nightmare is almost over.

It’s time for Stephen Strasburg to decide whether he wants to be a National or not.

Nothing new really to report from the ballpark, where everyone’s waiting for some final resolution to this story. Stan Kasten was up here earlier in the evening cracking jokes and making fun of media members the way he usually does. But I imagine Kasten and the rest of the front office has turned from jovial to serious as the final hour has arrived.

There’s likely to be some fast-and-furious back-and-forth between Scott Boras and the Nats between now and midnight. At some point, time will have run out and a final offer will be on the table. And then Strasburg will have to tell his agent either to take it or leave it.

My gut feeling: This kid wants to pitch. He’s not going to pass up many more millions of dollars than he ever thought he’d see in his lifetime.

But until we get the final word, gut feelings don’t count for anything.

Stay tuned. It’s almost over.
