Never thought I’d say this, but if Stephen Strasburg wants to learn how to be a successful big league pitcher, he might want to take some advice from Craig Stammen. Yeah, I know how ridiculous that sounds.

Still, Stammen (while lacking in Strasburg’s physical gifts) does have some pitching savvy. It’s on display tonight against the Rockies, with his only mistake coming on a solo homer by Brad Hawpe. Otherwise, Stammen has effectively kept the Colorado hitters off-balance.


And he’s also continued to hit the ball well himself. When Stammen came to the plate in the second, he carried a .200 average with him. That’s now higher after he roped a run-scoring double down the right-field line to put the Nationals on the board. A subsequent RBI single from Nyjer Morgan (who is 2-for-2 with a stolen base already) put the Nationals up 2-1, and that’s where we stand through three innings.
