Give Maryland fullback Haroon Brown this: His choice of headgear is certainly stylistic.

During camp, he’s been sporting a black hat with the letters “V-A.” The back includes the state of Virginia with a star for Richmond. And, there’s a personal touch – the No. 30 on the side.

“I got my number switched,” said Brown, who had No. 47 as a freshman. “In high school I wore 32 and couldn’t get it, so I got No. 30.”

Maybe the best part of all the inside of the brim. It’s a highway map of southern Virginia, which includes the Tidewater region.

“It’s my area code, the 757,” Brown said proudly. “That’s the whole 757.”

That’s a pretty sweet deal. You get to show some regional pride and render a paper map obsolete at the same time.

Sure, Al Gore would be pleased. But an even better thing is that it makes Brown – already a distinctive 5-foot-10, 257 pounds – even more recognizable to fans when he marches down Terrapin Alley.

“It’s my favorite hat,” Brown said. “I encourage everybody to get a hat from where you’re from and put your number on the side for game day.”
