Maryland linebacker Kenny Tate is among the 42 players nominated for the Lott Trophy, which is given to the top defensive player in the country.
(Yes, it’s April 12 and there is already a watch list announcement. Consider it the first of a great many in the months to come.)
Tate had 100 tackles (8.5 for loss) and 3.5 sacks last season. He’s switching from safety to a safety-linebacker hybrid for his senior season in a defense introduced by new coach Randy Edsall‘s staff.
Tate is one of 11 ACC players on the list. Cornerbacks Jayron Hosley (Virginia Tech) and Chase Minnifield (Virginia) are also included.
