The Caps just finished up practice here at Kettler. Bruce Boudreau said defenseman Jeff Schultz will not play tomorrow night against the Islanders. He skated with Alex Ovechkin before practice, but he will miss his second game because of a lower-body injury. Boudreau did say he “guesses” Schultz might be eligible to play by the weekend.

Mike Green said he is ready to go for tomorrow, and Boudreau said the same thing.

Ovechkin said if the playoffs were going on right now, he would play “for sure.” As it stands, both he and Boudreau appear to be holding to the “about a week to go” prognosis.

“I feel better today, and right now I feel better every day,” Ovechkin said. “Probably day-to-day. … I just need a couple od days, maybe a week.”

Of course, when pressed on the day-to-day prognosis, Ovechkin came back with, “Well, I just try to joke with you guys. Couple days ago I say a month. Today I say day-to-day.”

So … yeah. Maybe Alex is doing a pretty good job of establishing that Alex isn’t the best source for updates on his health.

Also, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported that Michael Nylander is heading to Russia … but then reported that it hasn’t been finalized yet. A team official said there is no official word yet. We’re still hoping to talk to George McPhee from Toronto about the siutation today.
