Here’s a few quick observations after a scoreless first period here at the Phone Booth:

* Both teams had a couple of power plays, and both looked a little rusty/disjointed. The Caps had Giroux-Backstrom-Knuble on one unit with Steckel-Aucoin-Semin on the other. Ovechkin and Green were on the points with Bourque and Carlson as the part of the second unit.

* Jose Theodore has watched the two kids have pretty solid efforts in net, and he’s 11-for-11 to this point.

* Alexandre Giroux hit the inside of the post early in the period. He probably needs to bury that one. Chris Bourque might have had an open teammate at the far post for a one-timer, but he put a shot on net instead. He might have made the pass if this were Hershey and he wasn’t fighting for a spot on the roster.

* Alexander Ovechkin and Mike Green led the team in TOI with 8:46 and Nicklas Backstrom was also over eight minutes. All of the PP time has something to do with that. Ovechkin and Backstrom were both in the PK rotation as well though.
