Our plane landed in Doha, Qatar this evening around 6:30. Although it was already nearly dark, from the airport we could see McDonal’s golden arches. Nothing like omnipresent, fast-food diplomacy to showcase the best of what America has to offer.

We went for dinner and supplies shopping at Villagio Mall, where we paid no taxes thanks to a wealthy Qatari government which offers free education, grocery and housing vouchers and all other kinds of freebies flowing from oil revenue. No Barack Obama paraphernalia for sale, at least that I could see.
