The successful but grating Gregg Williams will return to Washington on Thursday when Jacksonville visits Landover in the preseason finale. Williams, the arrogant but effective boss of the Redskins‘ defense the past four season, was the players’ pick to take over when coach Joe Gibbs retired in January. Instead, Williams not only didn’t move up, he moved out after his interview with Redskins owner Dan Snyder went bad. Informed speculation is that Snyder didn’t take well to Williams’ implied criticism of the sainted Gibbs and perhaps thought he had another Marty “Mr. Know It All” Schottenheimer on his hands.

Williams landed with the Jaguars, who did something the Redskins didn’t in 2007: win a playoff game. But he can’t be as independent under defensive-minded Jack Del Rio as he was under the offensive-minded Gibbs.

I wish I could tell you how Williams feel about his return, but through a Jaguars spokesman, he “politely declined” my interview request. I shouldn’t feel too bad, though. He has blown off the Jacksonville writers all summer. Guess they must be football novices, too.
