The Washington Kastles of World TeamTennis have been aggressive in promoting the success of their players here at the U.S. Open. And it’s true, they’ve done well.

Leander Paes, who played in every match for the Kastles and was awarded the league MVP, won the doubles Sunday with Lukas Dlouhy. Rennae Stubbs reached the semifinals of the women’s doubles. And Serena Williams reached the semifinals of the women’s singles before, ahem, bowing out with grace against Kim Clijsters Saturday night.

I asked Leander Paes whether playing TeamTennis helped him.

“Team tennis helped me recognize big situations, big points, because in team tennis, the scoring system the way it is, just infuses pressure situations,” he said. “Team tennis definitely helped me prepare for the US Open. Especially the fact that I only played in one ATP Tour event before this and we lost in the first round there, too.”

So there you go. Look for that quote in the Kastles marketing materials next year.
