Former Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter's tenure will be remembered not only for his steadfast commitment to justice, but also for his proactive measures in combating the opioid epidemic that has plagued the state of Oklahoma.

Hunter's tenure witnessed a series of positive policy decisions aimed at saving lives and alleviating the devastating impacts of opioid addiction on communities across Oklahoma.

Under his leadership, Oklahoma became a trailblazer in holding pharmaceutical companies accountable for their role in fueling the opioid crisis. His office’s successful lawsuits against Teva Pharmaceuticals, Endo Pharmaceuticals, and Purdue Pharma resulted in historic judgments and landmark victories that sent a clear message: Those prioritizing profits over public health will be held responsible for their actions.

"The opioid epidemic has negatively impacted hundreds of thousands of individuals across the country, and Oklahomans were not spared,” Hunter shares. “That is why it was necessary to hold those accountable who created the problem. When I was attorney general, I wanted businesses to prosper and I wanted to see them succeed in Oklahoma and beyond.

“My track record in supporting business speaks for itself — but not at the cost of human suffering. The opioid epidemic created a generation of addicts, broken families, and lined the pockets of individuals who put profit above people. That is why we had to vigorously pursue legal action."

Mike Hunter's Initiatives Extended Beyond Litigation

Through targeted campaigns and community outreach programs with major companies like Walmart and technology company EverFi, Hunter sought to raise awareness about the dangers of opioid misuse and provide resources for those struggling with addiction. He prioritized education and prevention efforts, recognizing the importance of addressing the root causes of opioid addiction.

Additionally, he championed initiatives to expand access to lifesaving treatments such as naloxone, which can reverse opioid overdoses and prevent fatalities. By advocating for broader distribution of this medication to first responders and community organizations, Hunter ensured that more Oklahomans had access to the tools needed to intervene in overdose emergencies effectively.

“People need it to be brought out of an overdose,” he explains. “Naloxone, it's the wonder drug that is administered to somebody when they're overdosing and it literally brings you out of the overdose and it's a lifesaving drug.”

One of the most significant aspects of Hunter's approach was his emphasis on collaboration. He worked closely with state agencies, law enforcement, health care professionals, and advocacy groups to develop comprehensive strategies for combating the opioid epidemic. By fostering partnerships and leveraging resources, he maximized the impact of his initiatives and formed a unified response to a complex public health crisis.

The results of Hunter's efforts are tangible and far-reaching. Lives have been saved, families have been spared the anguish of losing loved ones to opioid overdoses, and communities have been empowered to confront the epidemic head-on. While the fight against opioid addiction is far from over, his legacy serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for all Oklahomans.

By remaining committed to evidence-based strategies, prioritizing public health, and holding accountable those responsible for perpetuating the crisis, Oklahoma can honor Hunter’s legacy and move closer to a future free from the grips of the opioid epidemic.
