In the college football countdown this month, Southern Methodist checked in at No. 101 and Rice landed 10 spots later.

After consideration, I bumped the Owls up eight spots.


It wasn’t quite enough.

Some of it was probably SMU not being all that great. But Rice’s potent Chase Clement-to-Jarett Dillard connection was on point. And it looks like maybe the Owls will contend for a bowl berth after hanging half a hundred plus six in their opener.

As for another team that lived up to some promising chatter —- at least on one night —- Temple easily handled Army 35-7. It was the Owls’ first season-opening win since 2002, and it ensured Temple would not lose any buzz heading into its home opener.
