George Mason added its 31st regular season game Monday, announcing an agreement to face Rhode Island on Nov. 11 in Fairfax.

Yes, that game was added to the schedule less than six weeks before it will actually be played.

In any case, Mason’s new opener —- it was previously scheduled to debut under Paul Hewitt against Florida International in Blacksburg, Va., on Nov. 14 —- will be part of a men’s/women’s doubleheader at Patriot Center. Mason’s women’s team plays host to American that night.

In adding the Rams (20-14 last year), Mason gets an opponent that reliably lands in the top half of the Atlantic 10 on its schedule. In six of the last nine years, Rhode Island finished with an RPI between 60 and 110, with a peak of 40 in 2009-10. It hasn’t finished outside the top 110 since 2005-06.
