President Bush

\ A short e-mail sent out by National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said only that Mr. Bush “will go to the Mideast region in early January. Details to come.”\

\ But the trip will spark immediate speculation that Mr. Bush plans to go to Israel to follow up on the recently concluded peace conference in Annapolis. \

\ It would be Mr. Bush’s first trip to Israel as president. He traveled there once when he was governor of Texas. The president has been criticized for not going to Israel by those who have said it is a sign that peace between Israel and the Palestinians is not a priority for his administration. \

\ The trip will also be the first in many foreign trips for the president during his last year in office. He will travel to Africa in February to focus on AIDS and malaria prevention. \

\ Then there is a NATO conference in Romania in April, a G8 summit in Japan in July, a trip to the Olympics in Beijing, China, in August, and an economic conference in Peru in November. \
