It isn’t being mentioned much in the rave reviews of her inauguration-stopping rendition of ‘America,’ from the steps of the Capitol on Monday afternoon, but Kelly Clarkson is a rarity among Hollywood celebrities — a Republican.

The Texas-bred former American Idol winner, who backed Ron Paul before he dropped out of the Republican presidential race last year, got a handshake and a peck on the cheek from President Obama after her performance at the inauguration. She later tweeted a photo of herself and the president that she called “maybe the coolest photo I’ve ever been in.”

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, following Ms. Clarkson to the podium, had a one-word review: “Wow.”

Ms. Clarkson has described herself as a “Republican at heart,” but she said she voted for Mr. Obama last year because of his stance on gay rights.
