Gen. David Petraeus, the military commander credited with writing and then implementing the counterinsurgency strategy that has made huge gains for U.S. forces in Iraq, has returned to the U.S. after completing a 20-month tour.

Gen. Petraeus meets with President Bush at 11:15 a.m. in the Oval Office. The president will make a statement to reporters at the end of the meeting. 


Gen. Petraeus on Tuesday handed over command of U.S. forces in Iraq to his successor, Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, and will now go to head U.S. Central Command.
