If it were any other time, President Bush’s trip to the United Nations general assembly this week would launch seven days of news coverage focused on foreign policy.

Mr. Bush will meet with the president of Pakistan and likely speak with the Russian foreign minister during his three-day trip to New York, which begins today. And when he returns to the White House Thursday, he’ll hold meetings with the presidents of Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority, the prime minister of India, and then the president of Afghanistan on Friday.

But this is no ordinary week. The economy’s roller coaster ride last week and the government’s historic interventions will make that the focus for many at the gathering of world leaders, many of whom will be wondering what the global impact is going to be.
