Rookie safety Chris Horton had an incredible first start for the Redskins with two interceptions and a fumble recovery, but the seventh-round draft choice from UCLA is no Brig Owens … yet.

After a year on the Dallas Cowboys’ taxi squad, Owens, who had played quarterback at the University of Cincinnati, came to Washington in 1966 and became a starter. In the 12th game of that season against the New York Giants, Owens picked off two passes and recovered a fumble as Horton did last Sunday against New Orleans. What made Owens’ feat even more memorable was that he returned one of the interceptions and the fumble 62 yards apiece for touchdowns in Washington’s 72-41 victory, still the highest-scoring game in NFL history. The final three points came on a last-minute field goal by Charlie Gogolak, who was “encouraged” onto the field by former Giants linebacker Sam Huff to embarass Allie Sherman, the coach who had traded him to the Redskins in 1964.

Owens went on to start nine years for the Redskins before finishing out his career with three years as backup. His 36 interceptions were the franchise record until Hall of Famer Darrell Green broke it. And Owens’ interception return for a touchdown proved the winning points in the 1973 “Monday Night Football” victory over Dallas that’s still remembered for Ken Houston’s goal-line tackle of Walt Harrison as time expired. Owens became an attorney after his playing days were done and at one point was the agent for Redskins Hall of Fame receiver Art Monk.

Here’s the box score from the 72-41 game.
