ST. PAUL, MN | President Bush, speaking by video link to the Republican National Convention here tonight, delivered some obviously longed for read meat, telling them that John McCain will face down “the angry left.”

Mr. Bush, speaking of Mr. McCain’s more than six years in a POW camp, said that “if the Hanoi Hilton could not break John McCain’s resolve to do what is best for his country, you can be sure that the angry left never will.”

The crowd roared and stood to applaud. But then, Mr. Bush abruptly cut them off. He apparently couldn’t hear them.

It happened several times, including when the president was introduced by first lady Laura Bush. The crowd stood and roared enthusiastically, but then Mr. Bush began speaking, causing them to sit down prematurely.

It happened again when Mr. Bush talked about Mr. McCain’s support of the surge of troops to Iraq, and when he mentioned Mr. McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
