This just in: Congressional Republicans’ campaign arm, the NRCC, says Rep. Steve Cohen just equated Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate, and Barack Obama to Jesus.

Here’s the NRCC’s quote from Cohen from the House floor: “Barack Obama was a community organizer like Jesus, who our minister just prayed about. Pontius Pilate was a governor.”

As the NRCC helpfully notes, “Pontius Pilate sentenced Christ to death on a cross. So, exactly what point was Cohen trying to make?”

Hours earlier the McCain campaign released a new ad charging that Obama is out “to destroy” Palin, and less than 24 hours after they jumped on Obama for his “lipstick on a pig” comment, which they construed to be a slap at Palin. The Obama campaign has sent around all manner of columns blasting the McCain folks for having such a hair trigger over the lipstick remark, which from the context was aimed at McCain, not Palin.

Here’s the new McCain ad.

At this point we’ve got to wonder where it all ends. From the Biblical to the blusterous, we’ve seen it all over the last 24 hours. There’s got to be some higher power we can call on to cool things off.

Is Bono available?
